CHRISTMAS ANGELS APPEAR IN MISTERTON (+ pic)
Dozens of hand-knitted angels (pictured), each with a message of hope for Christmas and the New Year, were left around the village for people to pick up. Created by those attending Misterton Methodist Church’s Prayer Shawl Group, it meets on the 1st Wednesday of the month (not in January) in the Methodist School Room at 2.15pm. The idea is that the love of knitting/crocheting is combined with prayer to reach out to those in need of comfort, as well as in celebration and joy. Many blessings are prayed into every stitch. AWARDS FOR ACHIEVERS IN BASSETLAW
Bassetlaw residents, who are serving the community by their efforts for charity; for individual achievements; for sport or group activities; or to those who have overcome adversity to lead a normal life, can be nominated for a Bassetlaw Achiever’s Award. The next awards ceremony will be on Wednesday 15 March at Worksop Town Hall at 6.00pm.
Get in touch with local District Cllr Hazel Brand (tel: 891376) for a copy of the nomination form if you know of anyone who meets these criteria and who you would like to recommend for an Award. The closing date for nominations is Friday 10 February but if you want Cllr Brand to submit it and add her support, get it to her by Wednesday 1 February.
JUNIORS’ FOOTBALL – NEW LOOK FOR NEW YEAR
Misterton United’s junior football teams are seeing some changes for 2023. The Mini/Diddly kicks session for 3–6-year-olds is now on Saturday mornings at Misterton Sports Ground at 10.00am. There are also teams for under-8s and under-9s – and the age range can be extended if there is sufficient interest. SENIOR CITIZENS’ LUNCH & ENTERTAINMENT
Back in person after lockdown, the annual lunch and entertainment for Misterton’s senior citizens is on Saturday 14 January in the Methodist Hall. Doors open at 1.00pm. Invitations have gone out – but, if you haven’t had one, are new to the village, or newly-reached retirement age and would like an invitation, call 891629.
BASSETLAW ACTION CENTRE: UPDATE
Bassetlaw Action Centre (BAC) is continuing to provide:
- community transport for essential journeys – health appointments and shopping, for example
- housing advice services, which are telephone-based primarily but face-to-face appointments are also available
- a menu of Befriending services – including group befriending, telephone befriending, face to face and peer befriending
- the Staying Well Programme (6-week self-management course for people with a long-term condition) available both virtually and face to face
- Get Out Get Active (GOGA) service encourages people to become more active and will continue to offer one-to-one support
- home support service – a domiciliary service to help people who are just starting to struggle at home (this is a paid-for service).
- minibus trips – including the newly launched lunch club trips.
BAC would like to hear from anyone with a few hours to spare, who would like to volunteer to support the Action Centre to deliver essential services to local older and vulnerable people. In particular, they are looking for more local volunteer drivers to help people to get to health appointments and for shopping. Volunteers are paid 45p per mile for every mile they drive on behalf of the scheme.

KEEP PARISH CHURCH OPEN! (+ pic)
Make a New Year’s resolution – help to keep St Mary’s open! A letter to residents late last year called for support as the village is in danger of losing its Parish Church. The roof needs urgent repair: the beams used to build it were already recycled from William Huntingdon’s shipyard in 1722, when the village church was built. The beams are now in urgent need of repair, and a professional report from 2021 lists a range of further necessary work to the roof space to make it safe.
Like all parish churches, St Mary’s receives no financial support: not from the Government nor the Church of England. All funds for its upkeep, repairs, and running costs have to be raised by residents. Despite successful fundraising campaigns, including over last Christmas when the Parish Church celebrated its 300th anniversary, the Church Council is still some £10,000 short. Just to keep the church watertight, insured, and heated costs £4000 a year - but with the repairs to the roof, it has now become impossible to finance everything, without the generosity of residents.
The Parish Church is a unique Georgian Grade II* listed building (pictured). There are four ways to help: donate a regular amount to St Mary’s through the promised giving scheme, make a one-off donation, organise fund-raising events, attend church services and donate cash in the offertory. SIGN UP FOR GREEN WASTE RECYCLING
The gardening season might be over, but it’s not too early to get organised for 2023 and start to recycle more garden waste. Collections for Bassetlaw District Council’s 2023 Garden Waste Service start on 1 March. Subscriptions cost £34 – that’s just £1.70 per collection – and includes a 240-litre brown wheelie bin and fortnightly collections until 1 December. The brown bin can be used for grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, leaves, small branches and twigs, dead plants, weeds, and cut flowers. These materials are then recycled by being turned into compost, benefitting the environment.
In 2022, 13,740 garden waste collection subscriptions were issued, helping the Council to recycle an impressive 3681 tonnes of garden waste as of October 2022, with a month of the service still remaining. Renew subscriptions or sign up as a new customer before 31 January 2023. This is to ensure that you receive your garden waste pack before collections begin and secure the maximum number of collections available for the season.
