COUNCILLOR HELPS FUND MOBILE COMMUNITY SHOP (+ pic)
District Cllr Hazel Brand has donated £500 to Bassetlaw Food Bank’s mobile community shop - thanks to all those who sponsored her 96-mile walk earlier this year. She completed 50 miles of the Derwent Heritage Trail, then 46 miles from the start to finish of the Chesterfield Canal in August (signpost pictured). With all promised sponsorship money now in, Hazel was able to make the donation to the Food Bank, which runs the shop.
l To date, 4251 bags of provisions have been taken from this area to the Food Bank, most from Misterton’s churches, school, and Co-op store but with some help from neighbouring parishes. There will be cause of celebrations when 5000 is reached!
l Two winners of prizes at events in the run-up to Christmas have passed their winnings on to those in need. Thanks to them for bringing some cheer this Christmas!
SENIOR CITIZENS’ LUNCH & ENTERTAINMENT
Back in person after lockdown, the annual lunch and entertainment for Misterton’s senior citizens is on Saturday 14 January in the Methodist Hall. Doors open at 1.00pm. Invitations have gone out – but, if you haven’t had one, are new to the village, or newly-reached retirement age and would like an invitation, call 891629.
FUNDING FRUIT & VEG FOR YOUNG UKRAINIANS
When a teenage evacuee from Ukraine highlighted the difficulty getting fresh fruit and veg by youngsters back in her homeland, District Cllr Hazel Brand set about raising funds. While fresh produce is available, it is beyond the budget of most families – and within two weeks she had raised £350, which is now on its way to Ukraine. Many thanks for all the donations: from churches in Beckingham and Misterton, Misterton art group, and the sale of art materials.
NEW DATE FOR CAROL SERVICE, SOUTHMOOR LODGE
December’s Carol Service at Southmoor Lodge was postponed due to an outbreak of flu. The Carol Service has been rescheduled to Wednesday 11 January. This is still within the church’s season of Christmas - so it will be held then, providing infection rates are under control.
BASSETLAW ACTION CENTRE: UPDATE
Bassetlaw Action Centre (BAC) is continuing to provide:
- community transport for essential journeys – health appointments and shopping, for example
- housing advice services, which are telephone-based primarily but face-to-face appointments are also available
- a menu of Befriending services – including group befriending, telephone befriending, face to face and peer befriending
- the Staying Well Programme (6-week self-management course for people with a long-term condition) available both virtually and face to face
- Get Out Get Active (GOGA) service encourages people to become more active and will continue to offer one-to-one support
- home support service – a domiciliary service to help people who are just starting to struggle at home (this is a paid-for service).
- minibus trips – including the newly launched lunch club trips.
BAC would like to hear from anyone with a few hours to spare, who would like to volunteer to support the Action Centre to deliver essential services to local older and vulnerable people. In particular, they are looking for more local volunteer drivers to help people to get to health appointments and for shopping. Volunteers are paid 45p per mile for every mile they drive on behalf of the scheme.

COST OF LIVING SUPPORT
A booklet giving details of organisations that can help during the cost-of-living crisis has been produced by Bassetlaw District Council and other local organisations. Different sections cover money and finance, mental health, children and families, food, clothing, and so on. A web address and QR code is given for each entry. There is help accessing these organisations at Misterton Library. Hard copies are available in the Library (re-opens for the New Year on 3 January) or a digital version is at www.bcvs.org.uk/costofliving
ROLL-OUT OF ‘ASK FOR ANGELA’
Ask for Angela is being rolled-out to Bassetlaw villages. Ask for Angela is a scheme used by bars and other venues to keep people safe from sexual assault by using a codeword to identify when they are in danger or are in an uncomfortable situation. Anyone who thinks they are in danger can go to a member of staff and ‘ask for Angela’, a fictitious person. Staff will then help the person get home discreetly and safely by either escorting them to a different room, calling them a taxi and escorting them to it, or by asking the other party member to leave the establishment.
The scheme was started in Lincolnshire in 2016 by Hayley Crawford, then working for Lincs County Council. She is now with Notts Police as District Commander for Bassetlaw. Insp Crawford received a national award for Ask for Angela, presented at the House of Lords.
