PARISH COUNCIL & PARISH CHURCH PLAN CHRISTMAS EVENTS

Get the date in your diary! It may still be summer, but Misterton Parish Council has started to plan the annual switch-on of Christmas lights and associated events. The Parish Council will light up the three areas that it owns - Church Meadow, Windmill Garden, and Jubilee Garden – for the switch-on on Friday 2 December. There will be a display of Christmas trees in the Parish Church; they can be viewed that evening and the following morning (Saturday 3 December), when the Parish Church holds its annual Christmas Coffee Morning. There will be more details from next month onwards.

NEW DATE FOR SELL, SWAP, GIVE AWAY EVENT

There is a new date for the joint Misterton and West Stockwith Parish Council’s car boot event. It will be on Sunday 4 September (to be confirmed), starting at 9.00am for stallholders to set up then open to the public from 9.30am to 12 noon.  The Sell, Swap, Give-away event is to encourage people to pass on things they don’t want - but not to bin them, so avoiding landfill. The event is in the Vet’s car park. A pitch is £2.50—bring a table or use your car boot (subject to space available). All goods will be sold or swapped ‘as seen’ but no animals, birds, fish, etc.

Misterton and West Stockwith Parish Councils have formed a joint Green Group that helps to identify things that individuals can do to tackle climate change. The Parish Councils’ event scheduled for July was postponed due to the forecast heatwave that day.

LOCAL SURGERY RE-LAUNCHES PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP

Local residents, who are registered with the Riverside Misterton surgery, are invited to join the re-launched Patient Participation Group (PPG). Members of the PPG work with the practice to plan and improve services by contributing the patient’s or carer’s perspective. No qualifications or training is needed: just a desire to focus on positive action for the benefit of patients and staff.

Meetings will be held in each of the four Riverside surgeries. A virtual group will help those unable to travel. If interested, pick up a leaflet in the Misterton surgery or ring 01777 713 330.

MISTERTON AUTHOR DRAWS ON HEALTH EXPERIENCES

"For the first time in years there was some joy and a new hope that I could live a normal life doing the things I enjoy." Misterton resident, Liz Sabin, was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) at the age of 16. She has learnt to live with it and having JIA has helped her write a book that may help others. Although the story is fiction, it draws on her diagnosis and living with JIA. Entitled Coastal Expressions, it is available from Amazon (paperback or Kindle versions) or from Liz (tel: 07926 364 624, e-mail: elizabethsabin@aol.co.uk or via Facebook).

WEST STOCKWITH NEWS

COUNCIL TO TACKLE HIGHWAYS PROBLEMS

At its meeting in July, West Stockwith Parish Council discussed the response from the Department of Transport (DoT) regarding the protective barriers on the A161 in Misterton. The DoT indicated that Notts County Council had been behind the scheme, which had gone ahead with no consultation with either West Stockwith or Misterton Parish Councils and regardless that this is a popular circular walking route around the two villages. The Parish Council will respond – and include the poor visibility when joining the A161 from North Carr Road.

There have been further issues of speeding by white sports cars on North Carr Road, which have been reported to Notts Police. Residents with any other concerns are urged to report them.

PARISH CHURCH STARTING POINT FOR WALKING FESTIVAL

West Stockwith will be open to visitors during the Chesterfield Canal Trust’s walking festival from 10-18 September. And the Parish Church is the starting point for the popular Historic Churches Walk on Saturday 10 September, from the village to Clayworth, taking in other villages en route. It is also the day of the annual Ride & Stride, and the Church will put on a special display of historic pictures and artefacts for visitors.
