1000 YEARS OF MISTERTON HISTORY

What was Misterton like in 1945? In 1545? In 945? Discover the answers to these questions, and much more in between, at Misterton Millennium II, an exhibition showcasing 1000 years of history in Misterton and West Stockwith. The exhibition will be at Misterton Methodist Church on August Bank Holiday Monday, 25 August, between 10.00am and 6.00pm. Doors will open at 9.50am and the exhibition will be officially opened by District Cllr Hazel Brand at 10.00am.

The exhibition will be an expanded version of the original Misterton Millennium exhibition mounted in 2001. Since then, more research has been done and more fascinating history uncovered, including links to Robin Hood, the Mayflower Pilgrims, and the hymn ‘Jerusalem’, plus visits of at least three kings. There is so much to discover about Misterton and West Stockwith: an exhibition covering 1000 years can only show snapshots of the area’s history, but what snapshots they are!

CHANCE TO LEARN HERITAGE BUILDING SKILLS

Three of Bassetlaw’s historic buildings are getting a DIY SOS-style makeover thanks to a joint project between Bassetlaw District Council and Pinnacle Conservation.

The conservation specialist teaches practical skills, including stone masonry, joinery, lead work, and lime plaster/pointing on live conservation projects, while also helping to preserve assets for use by future generations. The course is open to anyone aged 16 and over and courses start in September. To find out more, visit www.pinnacleconservation.co.uk/heritage-skills/ or contact Stephanie O'Bee at s.obee@pinnacleconservation.co.uk.

This year, the free foundation classes in heritage construction craft skills are at Retford Road Cemetery Chapel in Worksop, Bassetlaw Museum, and the Walks of Life Museum in Tuxford.

BASSETLAW ACTION CENTRE: UPDATE

PARISH COUNCIL VACANCIES

With the resignation of Parish Cllr Corinne Cooper, there are vacancies for two parish councillors. The District Council has been notified and, if there are no requests for a by-election, the Parish Council will be free to co-opt.  At the last meeting of the Parish Council, Corinne was thanked for her input and dedication while she was a member.

Are you passionate about local issues? Do you want to help shape the future of our village? The Parish Council is inviting residents to fill the vacancies. It’s a chance to represent your neighbours, support local initiatives, be a voice for positive change

No prior experience is needed — just enthusiasm and a commitment to the community. Interested? Reach out to the Clerk (clerk@west-stockwith-parish-council.org.uk) and get involved.

ANNUAL RIDE & STRIDE EVENT

Saturday 13 September sees the annual Ride & Stride event – cycling, walking, pushing a pram, on horseback – any means of visiting local churches and racking up some sponsorship. Half the sponsorship goes to the church of the participant’s choice, and half goes to Notts Historic Churches Trust (NHCT). More information is on the NHCT website (nottshistoricchurchestrust.org.uk). The NHCT has recently supported both West Stockwith and Misterton churches, so this is a chance to give something back.

So if you’re not doing anything better that day, all the participating churches will be on the NHCT website but you can knock off a few in quite a short distance: Misterton (Parish and Methodist churches), West Stockwith, Walkeringham, Gringley, Beckingham, and Clayworth. Entry forms and other information will be in West Stockwith Parish Church from the beginning of August. A photo competition is run alongside the event – and there are rewards for those raising the most sponsorship.
