MISTERTON GALA – PROGRAMME PUBLISHED
See what a great line-up there is at this year’s Misterton Gala on Saturday 5 July! Pupils of local theatre group, Bedazzled, and Everett-Fox School of Dance will be performing, alongside live music and a fun dog show (pictured at a previous Gala). There’s a charity BBQ and bar and a grand raffle, with proceeds from the event going to Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance. The Gala runs from 12 noon to 5.00pm. Entry is £3 but children accompanied by an adult go in for free.
SUMMER READING CHALLENGE (+ graphic)
The 2025 Summer Reading Challenge begins on Saturday 5 July – so call into the Library on your way to Misterton Gala and pick up the challenge materials. The theme this year is Story Garden – adventures in nature and the great outdoors and, this summer, children can tap into a world of imagination through reading, exploring adventure, fantasy, and the magical world of storytelling. To ‘get into the spirit’ of the Reading Challenge, activities will take place in the Community Garden at the far end of the old school field on Saturdays 5 and 22 August – whatever the weather.
The Summer Reading Challenge runs from Saturday 5 July until Sunday 7 September. It invites children, aged 4–11, to read six or more library books over the summer. There are stickers to collect along the way and a medal and certificate for every child who completes the challenge. Children under 4 can join in with the mini challenge. It’s all free so head to Misterton Library anytime from Saturday 5 July to start the challenge. Misterton Library is open from 9.30am to 4.00pm on Gala day!

VILLAGE WALK & TALK
Local historian, David Seymour, will lead a Walk & Talk around West Stockwith, beginning at St Mary’s Church at 7.00pm. It is a flat, easy walk along the riverbank and pavements, taking around two hours. From the Church, the walk will go north along the bank of the Trent. Then through a water lane, back down along Main Street, briefly into North Carr Road, back down over the iron bridge, along Canal Lane as far as the Waterfront Inn. Then back to the Church and White Hart via the Canal Basin and riverbank.
There’s no charge but any donations will go towards the restoration of St Mary’s Church. There are not many places left on this walk so David will probably organise another one later in the summer. If you are interested in this walk or a future one, please contact David on 07952 544604.
CALL FOR DEVELOPMENT SITES
Bassetlaw District Council (BDC) is issuing a call for sites - land that owners wish to put forward for employment, retail, commercial, renewable energy, nature recovery as well as housing, including specialist forms of housing: affordable housing, housing for older people, and for gypsy and travellers. The identification of available land enables the Council to better understand how land could be used in the District in future. But it does not mean that planning permission would be approved for the land, or that the land would be included in any future Local Plan.
BDC will carry out an assessment of each plot’s suitability. The Council’s last call for sites was in 2019. Cabinet, which met on 3 June, approved the call for sites, which will run for 12 weeks until 3 September 2025. (For the full report, go to BDC’s Cabinet papers at bassetlaw.moderngov.co.uk).
CANAL TRUST OPENS NEW CENTRE
The Chesterfield Canal Trust has agreed a short-term lease for the ground floor of Tapton Lock Visitor Centre. Initially, it will primarily be an Information Centre and the Trust is looking for one or two people to manage the project. This will involve co-ordinating volunteers, looking after the money, setting out leaflets and any stock, etc. The Centre could sell ice creams, have a drinks machine, and possibly sell simple wrapped food, but this would all be bought in; the Trust is not intending to set up a café in the short term.
A number of volunteers will be needed to staff the Information Centre, in the same way that volunteers run the shop at Hollingwood Hub. At a minimum, the Trust hopes to have it open when John Varley II is running, but ideally every day. If you can help, either as a manager or as a shop volunteer (or both!), please contact publicity@chesterfield-canal-trust.org.uk
