PARISH COUNCIL ELECTS NEW CHAIR

Cllr Tony Wing was elected Chair of Misterton Parish Council at the Annual Meeting of the Parish Council this month (Tuesday 10 May). Cllr Alex Myers was elected Vice-chair. Cllr Peter Marsden was thanked for his five years as Chair.

The meeting was preceded by the Annual Parish Meeting, when Cllr Marsden gave his annual report. There were other reports from the Burial Committee, North East Bassetlaw Forum, Misterton Community Trust, and Misterton Area Partnership. The clerk gave the financial report. All will be reported in more detail in the Parish Council’s next newsletter, in Misterton & West Stockwith Parish News, and the minutes will be on the Parish Council’s website.

COUNCIL COMPLAINT ABOUT ROAD BARRIERS

The road barriers installed on Haxey Road are likely to create a significant safety issue, which is likely to cause greater harm than the reduced risk of vehicular accidents that installation sought to alleviate. This is the view of Misterton Parish Council in a letter to the Department of Transport (DoT). The Parish Council also points out that there was no attempt by DoT to draw on local knowledge on the use of Haxey Road as part of a circular walking route around Misterton and West Stockwith, and walking to and from the caravan sites, pub, cemetery, and the village.

Installation of the barriers has adversely affected walkers and cyclists, with a number of near misses reported. The Parish Council has asked that the barriers be removed or a footpath created along this stretch of road.

NO MOW MAY!

Grass verges on Gravelholes Lane and Station Street won’t be mowed in May. No Mow May is a national initiative to let wild flowers bloom and provide nectar for pollinators like honeybees, bumblebees, butterflies and moths, and beetles. Since the 1930s, nearly 7.5m acres of flower-rich meadows and pastures have been lost. This has had an effect on wildlife, with fewer pollinators and fewer insect-eating birds.

First launched in 2019 by the botanical charity Plantlife, No Mow May is a campaign that encourages local authorities and gardeners to not cut their grass during May. Setting an example, Misterton Parish Council won’t mow these verges, but Church Meadow, Windmill Garden, and the Sports Field will have the usual attention to the grass.

A161 ROAD CLOSURE AGAIN

The A161 Stockwith Road, Walkeringham, will again be closed at the railway bridge.

This is because engineers had some problems with existing utility apparatus across the bridge, which meant that they could not complete all the original works within the previous road closure. The road closure dates are from Monday 6 June for four weeks.

VILLAGE EVENTS FOR PLATINUM JUBILEE

A programme of events for the Platinum Jubilee over the holiday weekend (2-5 June) will be distributed to all houses by Misterton Parish Council. CONCERT RAISES FUNDS FOR CHURCH (+ pic)

A village concert that was an early start to Platinum Jubilee celebrations raised £600 for the Parish Church. Chamber orchestra, Lincoln Pro Musica, was the guest at the special concert, which was followed by a cream tea. The orchestra has played to a packed house in West Stockwith before and is a regular fixture in the area, joining Gainsborough Choral Society for a performance of Mozart’s Requiem recently.

PARISH COUNCIL PLANS PLATINUM JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS

West Stockwith will play its part in celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with two events in the village. Co-ordinated by the Parish Council, on Thursday 2 June there is a tea for pensioners in the Village Hall. Invitations have been issued by the Parish Council – contact the Clerk (890294) for details. Then on Saturday 4 June, there is a

family fun day on the Malt Kiln from 11.00am – 4.00pm. There will be traditional games, stalls, music, and refreshments – and all are welcome.

ST MARY'S NOMINATED COMMUNITY CHAMPION!

Lincolnshire Co-op has confirmed that St Mary's Parish Church has been selected as a Community Champion from Sunday 5 June to Saturday 3 September 2022. The main fundraising comes from members – every time a member shops and uses their dividend card, a donation will go to the local Community Champions. In addition, money is raised from carrier bag sales, collection boxes, event days, and colleagues' fundraising. The Church has to raise £25,000 for roof repairs so every penny helps - please support the local Co-op store and help St Mary's!

PARISH COUNCIL HAS VACANCIES

West Stockwith has vacancies for councillors. If you have an interest in the village and would like to play a part in its future, get in touch with the Clerk to the Parish Council on 890294 or e-mail WestStockwithPC@outlook.com
