METHODIST CHURCH THANKS VISITORS

Misterton Methodist Church says a big thank you to all those who supported the recent anniversary weekend (14/15 June). Saturday’s Coffee Morning raised £272 for Church funds. Sunday’s anniversary service was led by Jean Marshall. In a change to the timetable of services, Misterton Methodist Church will hold services at 10.30am on the 1st and 3rd Sundays in the month only.

● For room bookings at the Methodist Church in July, contact Stephen (stephenabilton@netscape.net).

MISTERTON GALA – MORE ATTRACTIONS SIGNED UP! (+ pic)

There are some new additions to the already great line-up at this year’s Misterton Gala on Saturday 5 July! A massive, 1-metre-tall teddy bear will be there to be won on the Parish Church’s stall, part of its fund-raising appeal for new bells. JJ’s Bookshop (in partnership with Usborne) will be there, with a fantastic selection of children’s books and activity packs. Misterton swimming club, Aquabuddies, will also be there with a raffle to help raise funds to replace some well-loved equipment. Aquabuddies is a friendly, local swimming club, based at the pool in the grounds of Misterton Primary School, for children of all abilities from age 3+, as well as baby and toddler splash sessions.

Sarah’s Sweet Treats has signed up and will be serving delicious bakes and cakes, as well as tea, coffee, and pop. There’ll also be sweet bags, lollies, and tasty treats for all ages! Pre-order an afternoon teas or cream tea to avoid missing out (tel: 07904 667464)! And Haxey Scout Group is another recent sign-up: scouts will be promoting their group and running a variety of fun games for all ages, including the classic Net-a-Duck! Find out more about what they do and enjoy some family-friendly fun. Pictured is a previous year’s Gala.

There’s a charity BBQ and bar and a grand raffle, with proceeds from the event going to Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance. The Gala runs from 12 noon to 5.00pm. Entry is £3 but children accompanied by an adult go in free.

CANAL TRUST OPENS NEW CENTRE

The Chesterfield Canal Trust has agreed a short-term lease for the ground floor of Tapton Lock Visitor Centre. Initially, it will primarily be an Information Centre and the Trust is looking for one or two people to manage the project. This will involve co-ordinating volunteers, looking after the money, setting out leaflets and any stock, etc. The Centre could sell ice creams, have a drinks machine, and possibly sell simple wrapped food, but this would all be bought in; the Trust is not intending to set up a café in the short term.

A number of volunteers will be needed to staff the Information Centre, in the same way that volunteers run the shop at Hollingwood Hub. At a minimum, the Trust hopes to have it open when John Varley II is running, but ideally every day. If you can help, either as a manager or as a shop volunteer (or both!), please contact publicity@chesterfield-canal-trust.org.uk

BASSETLAW ACTION CENTRE: UPDATE

Bassetlaw Action Centre is looking for new volunteers

Bassetlaw Action Centre is continuing to help people in in the district. They need volunteers to help with a number of services where they will be given full training and expenses paid. The roles are:

  • drivers – using their own car or one of BAC’s vehicles (a wheelchair accessible vehicle or a minibus) to take people to appointments, shopping or on social visits

  • befrienders – creating friendships and talking regularly to people either face to face or on the phone

  • GOGA/Men Walk Talk Volunteers – leading walks around Idle Valley Nature Reserve and giving people a chance to talk about their mental health in a supportive environment

  • supported Hospital Discharge Service Volunteer – helping people who have recently been discharged from hospital to settle back home by doing odd jobs such as light cleaning or shopping or offering a short-term befriending service

  • administration – general administrative duties within the Retford office

Commitments can be as little as one hour a week and are structured to fit around the volunteer’s life. If you think that you might be a good match for one of these roles, or would like to ask some questions, , please call 01777 709650, e-mail enquiries@actioncentre.org.uk or visit BAC’s website (bassetlawactioncentre.org.uk).
