Worksop and the World - The Campaign to Defend Aid and Development
Charity begins at home. But it shouldn’t end there, even in these difficult days of Covid-19 restrictions and furlough. The UK is one of the top ten richest countries in the world and we can be proud that, through our taxes, we do our bit to help those most in need.
Supported by many of the major international development charities, Worksop and the World is a group bringing local people together to start a conversation about why UK Aid really matters; and it’s a success story we want to continue.
Over the last decade the number of people, around the world, living on less than two pounds a day has halved. Yet there are still almost a billion people who remain trapped in poverty. This, more often than not, is an accident of birth. A child born into poverty whether in Worksop or Retford, or beyond, deserves a fair chance at life.
UK Aid is best for British taxpayers when it showcases British values at their best. This means helping children who are least fortunate and playing our part in helping countries to become safer and happier places for future generations. Giving a hand up so people can stand on their own two feet.
UK Aid saves lives, It has been used to protect children in Syria, responded to Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo and supported the vaccination of tens of millions of children, against deadly diseases, globally. We know that investing in health care, vaccination and education not only helps children to survive; it helps them to thrive and then contribute to the world as adults.
